Seeds of Meaning: Breeding Beauty, Cultivating Purpose

If you’ve been following along for a while, you may already know that my journey into hybridizing began during one of the hardest seasons of my life. When our dog Layla passed away, I found myself searching for something that could hold both grief and beauty at the same time. As writer Jamie Anderson so beautifully said, “Grief is just love with no place to go.” In many ways, I found that place through dahlia hybridizing. I wanted to find a way for Layla to live on. Naming a dahlia after her felt like a quiet, living tribute, something that could grow and return year after year. Over time, that intention gently reshaped our business. It started as a tribute by giving grief/love a place to settle, taking root in a way that felt both meaningful and enduring but grew into a passion for creating new dahlia varieties.

Early on, we made a quiet promise to ourselves: when the day finally came to release the dahlias named after our dogs, we would donate a portion of the proceeds to animal shelters. Supporting shelters felt like the most natural way to honor the lives that changed ours so profoundly, by helping other animals find the same chance at love and home like our rescues did.

Then, after a recent cancer diagnosis in our family, everything shifted again. We decided to name a dahlia after my aunt and commit a portion of its future sales to cancer research. That decision sparked a much larger conversation. A conversation that fundamentally changed how we believe our business should exist in the world.

In a world that often feels overwhelming, uncertain, and heavy, we felt a responsibility to let our little light extend beyond the fences of our farm. That’s when the idea of breeding with purpose truly took root. If we were going to pour years of our lives into these plants, into the waiting, the failures, the triumphs, then it should stand for something more.

The dahlias named after our dogs will support animal shelters. A dahlia named for my aunt will benefit cancer research. One named in honor of my grandmother will support Alzheimer’s research. And rather than drawing a line there, we’ve chosen to keep listening to our hearts and to the causes that shape our lives. As our breeding program expands, so will the organizations we choose to support.

When you purchase one of our dahlias, you’re doing more than supporting a small farm, you’re becoming part of a larger story. A story rooted in remembrance, love, and hope. Moving forward, any dahlia connected to a specific cause will be clearly marked with a "Giving Back" banner, so you’ll know exactly which bloom carry a purpose.

This is what breeding beauty and cultivating purpose means to us: giving love a place to land, creating dahlias that carry meaning and shaping something that can inspire, support, and endure - one bloom at a time.
